The Canberra Region Joint Organisation together with the ACT Government applauds the announcement of international flights for passengers and freight by Singapore Airlines.
Clr Wendy Tuckerman, Chair of the CBRJO and Mayor of Boorowa Council said the announcement is a game changer for regional NSW. ‘This new venture is a significant building block in driving economic growth and further enhancing the diversity, opportunity and ability to promote multiple regional benefits across the Canberra region’. The CBRJO have been a strong supporter of Canberra Airport and by having Singapore Airlines as the carrier of choice for both in bound and out bound passenger travel as well as freight; will have a significant impact across the 12 Local Government Areas of South East NSW.
Chief Minister of the ACT Andrew Barr said “This has been a vision of mine and everyone at the Capital Airport Group for many years and I’m delighted to see it come to fruition today. The start of direct international flights will create significant positive economic and social impacts for Canberra and the region in terms of trade, investment, higher education and tourism. The rest of the world is now finally on our doorstep.”
Clr Tuckerman said ‘Our region has a catchment of 650,000 people with a diverse geographic area that stretches from the South-West Slopes, Alpine and Snowy Mountains of South East NSW. This announcement has a multiplier effect of regional benefits which will further strengthen the cross-border collaboration and connectivity of those that live and work in our regional communities.
The mission of CBRJO is to be a regional leader that facilitates opportunities and partnerships to create sustainable vibrant communities and this announcement by Singapore Airlines reiterates our agenda. “By having international flights at our doorstep, will provide a strong platform by which the CBRJO can promote its competitive strengths to potential visitors, investors, students, residents and businesses alike,” Clr Tuckerman said.
The freight of produce grown in our region will be markedly cheaper, with low cost options that have never been accessed before. Not to mention the gateway for tourism; with options for those that wish to depart from Canberra Airport, but also overseas visitors wanting to visit the nation’s capital and Canberra region without having to go through Sydney or Melbourne.
The CBRJO celebrates Singapore Airlines coming to our region. We now have a choice and this is empowering not only for agricultural production but for tourism, travel and generating exposure across Asia and the Pacific.
CBRJO consists of 12 Councils across the South East of NSW including Bombala, Boorowa, Cooma-Monaro Shire, Eurobodalla Shire, Goulburn-Mulwaree, Harden Shire, Palerang, Queanbeyan City, Snowy River Shire, Upper Lachlan, Yass Valley, Young Shire, as well as the ACT Government.
